The Department of Commerce at Maruthupandiyar College, Thanjavur, was established in the academic year 1997–1998 with the introduction of the B.Com programme. With a strong commitment to academic excellence and professional growth, the department expanded into a Postgraduate Department by introducing M.Com in 2004. It was further upgraded as a Research Department in 2007 with M.Phil., and Ph.D. programmes were introduced in 2010.

The department focuses on delivering quality, value-based education that equips students with knowledge in commerce, business, finance, and entrepreneurship. Dedicated and experienced faculty members inspire students to achieve academic excellence and career success. Through seminars, workshops, Tally training, and practical exposure, students are prepared for careers as Auditors, Account Officers, Financial Advisors, Marketing Executives, and entrepreneurs, contributing meaningfully to society and national growth.
